On Thursday, Winfrey Tweeted to fans that she was “hard at work planning the final shows.” It was November when the 57-year-old Queen of Talk announced that she was walking away from The Oprah Winfrey Show. With her TV show set to end soon, Winfrey will focus her attention on her self-titled cable network, OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, which has reshuffled its lineup and struggled to gain momentum with viewers since its launch in January.
OWN — a joint venture with Discovery Communications — debuted on Jan. 1, taking over the slot occupied by the Discovery Health Channel. After a big debut that averaged 583,000 viewers in primetime in its first week, OWN has seen its ratings fall below those of the channel it replaced. Many Oprah loyalist complained that they would have to pay additional cable premiums just to see the program.
