Alec Baldwin For “Rock Of Ages” Movie

Emmy-winning actor Alec Baldwin, who tapped into his talents as a “Song & Dance Man” as host of the 2010 Academy Awards, is being courted for a lead role in New Line Cinema’s buzzworthy movie musical Rock of Ages, a theatrical adaptation of the Tony Award-nominated Broadway production of the same name.

Rock of Ages is the story of a small town girl and a big city rocker who fall in love to the soundtrack of some of greatest pop classics of the ‘80s. Bedtime Stories director Adam Shankman, who stepped behind the lens to helm the movie version of another hit Broadway production — Hairspray – in 2007, has been commissioned to direct the film.

Alec has been offered the role of Dennis Dupree, “an ex-rocker who hangs onto his glory days by operating the Bourbon Room, a club on the Sunset Strip,” The Wrap said Wednesday.

“While Baldwin has simply been offered the role at this point, there’s a strong chance he’ll accept it and sign on to the New Line movie. Will Ferrell was previously rumored to have received an offer to play Dennis, so clearly the studio has set its sights high for the supporting role.”

On Tuesday, Baldwin scooped a Golden Globe nomination for the Best Actor In A Television Comedy Or Musical. A trophy he took home last year. Alec’ll compete against Steve Carell (The Office), Thomas Jane (Hung), Matthew Morrison (Glee), and Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory) at a ceremony in Hollwood next month.

Tom Cruise, Taylor Swift, and Mary J. Blige are among the stars who have been offered parts in the production.

Rock of Ages: The Movie is eyeing a Summer 2012 release.
