Madonna was accused of letting down the people of Malawi
Madonna was accused of letting down the people of Malawi after she admitted plans for a girls school had been scrapped.Causing quite the letdown, Madonna has reportedly scrapped plans for the opening of a girls school in Malawi.Madge performed a brick-laying ceremony at the school site in Chinkhota Village, Lilongwe, in April 2010, announcing it was her dream to build a school for girls to educate future doctors and lawyers. But less than 12 months later the star is abandoning the plans, insisting she intends to create other secondary schools elsewhere in the country.
Earth-moving equipment has been taken away and the site has become overgrown. Villagers’ fears were confirmed by an advert Madonna placed in local newspapers saying: “In a country where 33 per cent of Malawian girls attend primary school, I realise that the plans I had in place for the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls simply would not serve enough children.“The implementation of my original vision is now on a much bigger scale. I want to reach thousands, not hundreds, of girls. I want to do more and I want to do it much better.”A group of villagers have organised themselves to retake their land by force and redistribute it among themselves.Amos Phiri, 39, resisted giving up two hectares of land left by his ancestors in return for compensation of £1,200. He said the authorities forced him to go.
